Maidenhead United are delighted to welcome the arrival of defender George Abbott and midfielder Mathew Achuba.
A product of Brentford and Watford’s academies, George also represented Wales at youth level captaining the U15 and U19 sides. He also donned the armband for Watford’s youth teams, but loan moves would be where he’d secure his first taste of men’s football.
He joined Chippenham Town for the early part of the 2023/24 season before switching towns and heading to Potters Bar to see the campaign out. He followed this up with a loan move to Hendon the following season, before heading back to a town he was starting to call home in Potters Bar.
The 2025/26 season saw him venture abroad to Poland and Górnik Łęczna in the Betclic 1 Liga. He started the season strong, making 15 appearances prior to the winter break.
Following George’s arrival, Ryan Peters said: “I was eager to bolster the team defensively after losing our captain last season. George has terrific pedigree and has impressed over the time spent with us.”
George’s first words after putting pen to paper following a short trial period were one of excitement for the season ahead: “I’m delighted, obviously I’ve only been here for a week or so but since joining all of the boys and the staff have been very welcoming. I like the club’s ambition for this season, so I’m looking forward to getting going.”
The week or so George has spent with the club has been hugely beneficial, something which he recognised: “I thought it was really good, getting some minutes in the last friendly and good to see how the boys play, how the team plays and hopefully bring that into the season.”
Talking on the draw of why Maidenhead United, George said: “I think it was the ambitions of the club and working under a great set of staff and in a great dressing room. So, I think we can go far this season and aim to get promoted.”
George will wear number 6 for the 2026/27 season.
Matty began his career in the academy setup at Ebbsfleet United and made a handful of cameos with the Fleet before finding comfort with Wingate and Finchley. He spent four years with the Blues, time which saw him transition into more of a holding midfielder and make 119 appearances, with an impressive eight goals in his final full season in North London.
Most recently Matty’s midfield presence was felt in Hemel Hempstead where had played for roughly 18 months, making 64 league appearances. He was a key part of the squad that saw the Tudors push into the play-off positions last campaign, winning numerous Man of the Match awards along the way.
Ryan Peters was full of praise following our new number 18’s arrival: “Matty was terrific last season and definitely one of the standout defensive midfield players in the league.
“We tried to acquire Matty’s services really early in the offseason, but at the time had a number of suitors acquiring his services. Once the opportunity arose to have another conversation with him, we jumped at the chance. We definitely have a complete blended midfield with the arrival of Matty.”
Matty’s first words as a Magpie were filled with ambition and excitement: “I’m buzzing! I can’t wait to get going, meet the team and I’m looking forward to a good season here and to get promoted.
Our new midfield man spoke similarly on how fond he was of joining the group: “I just felt like this was the team suitable for me. But not only for me, I felt as though I could help this team and when I spoke to the gaffer I liked the project. Obviously, I’m familiar with the gaffer, I met him two seasons ago, so it was a no brainer to come and work for the gaffer and play for Maidenhead.
Matty promises to offer a playstyle many will be able to buy into: “I’m an energetic midfielder, I like to get around, up and down the pitch. Basically, non-stop running and just work hard to give my all to the team and to the fans as well.”
Matty will wear shirt number 18 for the upcoming campaign.
Both players are eligible for immediate selection.
Both George and Mathew are avaialble to sponsor for the 2026/27 season. Please contact commercial@maidenheadunitedfc.org to find out more.
