Maidenhead United are delighted to welcome the return of winger Josh Coley.
Five years after his departure, Josh returns to York Road to don the black and white once again. His first spell saw him make play 37 times and score five in the National League before heading into the EFL.
Last season, Josh was part of the Ebbsfleet United squad who went toe-to-toe with United in the ever-close National League South Play-off race. For The Fleet, the 27-year-old made 50 appearances last campaign and found the net four times; including at York Road.
After being reunited five years later, Ryan Peters said: “I think I speak for all involved at MUFC when I say this individual excited us week after week in his first spell with us.
“He will spearhead our attack with quality and aggression, while giving us a sense of calm off the pitch. I’m delighted he chose us over the host of clubs pursuing him.”
Talking for the first time since his return to York Road, Josh said: “It feels really good to be back. When I sat down with Peyo, I mean I call him Peyo but he’s gaffer now! It was a really easy conversation, it’s probably the one that stuck out to me the most, and it’s really nice to be back.
“A lot is similar, but a lot has changed as well. It’s good how the club’s moving and the way they’re going. But yeah, I’m really excited to be back.”
The club looks slightly different since Josh’s last spell, as amongst other changes Ryan Peters now takes charge, something which Josh is relishing: “Huge respect to Dev because he looked after me a long time ago but it’s really exciting [to be back]. It’s a big step for the club to trust Peyo and he was excellent when he came in charge last year.
“Dev’s given some great experience and helped him along the way. So, I’m hoping there’s some similarities there but a little bit of the modern era to come with it and see if we can kick on.”
Many United fans will be familiar Josh and his style of play, which he hopes hasn’t changed too much in the last five years: “I mean I’d like to say I’m as fast as I used to be but I’m still nippy, still energetic and love to create chances.
“They [Maidenhead fans] saw a little bit when we played at York Road and that was angry Josh that day but hopefully less boos and more cheers from the fans this time!”
Keen to play a crucial role in what he described as ‘something special’, Josh elaborated and said: “Wherever I’ve gone, I’ve always wanted to be part of something. I’ve been promoted before with Exeter but not necessarily played a major part in that.
“I played a lot of games and made a lot of appearances but a lot of them off the bench and trying to affect games that way.
“Hopefully I can be a bigger staple in that type of push and promotion charge, playoff charge, whatever it may be. But [I want] to really be part of something and make my statement.”
