Our Women’s walking footballers recently excelled themselves again at the Fulham Walking Football Tournament.

Player-coach Deborah Smirfitt reports: “Up against some big names we showed brilliant teamwork and excellent skill to top our group and qualify for the Premier League part of the tournament.”

“In the group stages a 1-1 draw with a powerful North London team, then a great attacking performance gave us a 4-0 win over Fishponds (and that was with a player of the tournament goalkeeper preventing at least another four). In the last group game a brilliant defensive display earnt a 0-0 draw against favourites Arsenal.”

“Having conceded only one goal, we were confident going into face a very strong Thames side in the premier league semi final. It was a great game ending 0-0 and going to penalties which went to sudden death and we just missed out.”

“Undeterred, in the Third & Fourth play-off versus Arsenal again we scored early and held on for a joyous victory. Thames went on to beat Bracknell in the final but we were super proud to more than hold our own against some top teams.”

“There was fantastic goalkeeping from Karen, supported by Cookie and guest player Shazza. Both Jo and Jan were excellent in defence, and on the wings, Sue, Cookie and Shazza - two goals too! - worked so hard. I managed one goal from midfield and Lin succeeded in firing in three goals, including the winner against Arsenal.”

“A brilliant day - showing just how much we are progressing!” If you are interested in learning more about women’s walking football contact Deborah on debsmirfitt@gmail.com
