MUFC Women Development were the first Magpies team to play in the semi-final of a national competition since 1936 on Sunday but their run to the last four of the FAWNL Reserve Plate came to an end at the hands of Stoke City Development at the Potters training ground.

Goalless at half time against the leaders of the FAWNL Reserve Midland division – a side who had scored some twenty-five goals in their last three matches and had won each of their most recent 13 matches in all competitions – the Magpies ultimately ended up on the wrong end of a 4-0 margin in a match played in dreadful conditions.

Ryan Robinson’s team saw goalkeeper Amy Whale voted as opposition player of the match as the hardworking Magpies fought to stay in the game and the impressive Whale reflected: “It was a tough result but I can’t fault the team’s performance, especially with the challenging weather conditions. I don’t think the scoreline fully reflects the hard work and effort everyone put into this game. Reaching this stage in the competition is a massive achievement and I’m excited for us to build on from this.”

MUWFC Development return to league action on Sunday when they will host AFC Sudbury at Cox Green Leisure Centre (2pm). Meanwhile, the First Team – who saw their match at Bournemouth Sports postponed for a second time – will travel to Portishead Town.
