Maidenhead United Women Make Cup Progress
Posted on 23rd October 2023
Maidenhead United Women have equaled a club record and have made it through to the First Round Proper of the Women’s FA Cup after a tense yet thrilling victory at Richmond & Kew in the Third Qualifying Round on Sunday afternoon.
United trailed the Tier 7 side after the hosts took the lead on the hour, but United’s experience shone through with senior players Simone O’Brien and substitute Natalie Cowell scoring after teenager Izzy Stockton made the game level again with a quick reply.
A cup upset looked likely when Charlotte Close set up Hannah Curwen to score the opener for the home side, but nifty footwork by Stockton soon gave Maidenhead a foothold in the game. O’Brien gave United the lead with twelve minutes remaining, bending home a perfect free-kick and Cowell tapped home after Megan Halfacree’s lung-busting run to seal victory in injury but between times there was another heart-stopping moment as Richmond & Kew defender Ellysia Crabb saw her penalty kick come back off the post.
Monday’s draw paired United with Tier 5 side Sutton United, a match that will be played at the U’s home ground on Sunday 12th November.
