NO PLACE LIKE HOME FOR MAGPIES WOMEN
Posted on 26th March 2024
Maidenhead United Women kept up their recent excellent home form with a second half super-show against a Portishead Town side who had defeated the Magpies in the reverse fixture just 8 weeks ago.
The Somerset side had lost their most recent three fixtures but started well in the York Road sunshine with Annys Turner coming so close to converting an early opening. United grew into the game as the first half wore on but only had efforts off target from Natasha Rasmussen and Simone O’Brien to show for their efforts.
The second period was a different story and United opened the scoring just before the hour mark thanks to O’Brien’s wicked corner delivery and Sarah Thompson’s imperious header. Within ten minutes the league was doubled. Nat Cowell won a free-kick in the Portishead half and Megan Halfacree’s delicious delivery was converted stylishly by Cowell.
Inside the final few minutes substitutes Gemma Luke and RJ Jauad-Taborda added some gloss to the scoreline with excellent finishes. The Magpies now face a game against relegation-threatened Torquay United over the Easter weekend. The Magpies Development team meanwhile will have a home game against AFC Sudbury Reserves on Sunday 31st March at 2pm. The Development team travelled to unbeaten leaders Oxford United on Sunday afternoon and performed well. Goalless at half time, United hit the crossbar and forced some important saves from the home goalkeeper but ultimately went down to three second half goals to a side who are now one win away from winning the division.
